Braun Intertec Develops and Implements Construction Stormwater Plans

Industrial Expansion – Rogers, MN

In 2018, Braun Intertec was retained to prepare a construction Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) design for an expansion of a manufacturing facility in an existing industrial park in Rogers, Minnesota. The expansion was designed for approximately 480,000 square feet, and the construction effort was planned for completion of two phases over two years and is nearing completion at the end of 2019.

The SWPPP design was prepared and implemented for each of the two phases. Additional services performed by Braun Intertec for the expansion project included geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, hazardous materials testing and abatement, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure plan preparation and initial training, threatened and endangered species evaluation and roofing and firestopping special inspections.

Navy Superfund Site Demolition and Redevelopment

Braun Intertec took the lead role at a 122-acre Navy Superfund site in Fridley, Minnesota in providing pad-ready sites for redevelopment. Existing industrial manufacturing buildings at the site constructed prior to WW II totaled over 2 million square feet but were underutilized and in a declining condition that warranted demolition. Redevelopment plans proposed seven industrial buildings at the site totaling over 1 million square feet while retaining 475,000 square feet of the original building to consolidate the existing tenant and the signature smokestacks at the site for historical reasons.

The redevelopment project was divided into 4 phases that were constructed between 2014 and 2019 and involved demolition of approximately 1.5 million square feet of existing buildings, also performed in phases.

The construction stormwater plans were developed and implemented by Braun Intertec for each phase and included separate stormwater plans for demolition operations due to the existence and extent of the site above- and below-grade stormwater systems. Challenges for the stormwater design included interpretation of WW II-era plans for as-built stormwater systems, the presence of significant contamination at the site undergoing remediation during site construction activities, conformance to both federal and state Superfund restrictions during construction and working with multiple general contractors over the life of the project. In addition, the project was near the Mississippi River.

Redevelopment of the site was completed in 2019, and no stormwater concerns were noted by environmental regulators during the life of the project.
