To meet growing healthcare needs, Regions Hospital built a $200 million, 10-story expansion that included new patient care units, a new parking ramp, renovation and expansion of the emergency department, and a new lobby and main entrance.

We performed Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments, and prepared a Response Action Plan (RAP) and Emissions Control Plan to address contamination during redevelopment. The site was entered into the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Voluntary Investigation and Cleanup program and was approved by program staff. After the RAP was approved, we oversaw and managed the removal of contaminated fill.

Faced with poor soil conditions and heavy foundation loads, our geotechnical engineers evaluated the subsurface soil, groundwater and bedrock conditions with numerous deep soil borings. Working closely with the designers, we provided recommendations for several foundation support alternatives. During construction, our International Code Council certified inspectors worked closely with project designers and contractors to determine building components and materials were in conformance with project plans and specifications. Our services included inspection and testing of more than 1,800 H-piles, evaluation of pile capacities using a pile dynamic analyzer, vibration monitoring, compaction testing of backfill materials, inspection of concrete steel reinforcement and concrete, and testing and inspection of masonry, structural steel and fireproofing.
